Understanding Panchang

The five limbs of the day.

“Panchang” literally means “five limbs” in Sanskrit. Each of these five elements is calculated daily based on astronomical positions and together they determine the spiritual quality of any moment.

1

Tithi

Lunar day

The day of the lunar calendar, based on the angular distance between Sun and Moon. There are 30 tithis in a lunar month, split across Shukla Paksha (bright half) and Krishna Paksha (dark half).

2

Nakshatra

Lunar constellation

The position of the Moon among the 27 lunar mansions (nakshatras). Each nakshatra has a ruling deity, nature, and influences daily activities and their outcomes.

3

Yog

Auspicious combination

A combined measure of Sun’s and Moon’s longitudes. Some yogas (like Amrit, Shubh) are highly auspicious; others (like Vyatipata, Vaidhriti) are avoided for new initiatives.

4

Karan

Half-tithi

Half of a tithi, used for finer-grain muhurat analysis. There are 11 karanas — 4 fixed (sthira) and 7 movable (chara). Different activities favor different karanas.

5

Vaar

Day of the week

The weekday, each ruled by a different planet — Sun (Sunday), Moon (Monday), Mars (Tuesday), Mercury (Wednesday), Jupiter (Thursday), Venus (Friday), Saturn (Saturday).

Panchang varies subtly by city — a sunrise 8 minutes earlier in Mumbai than in Delhi means Rahu Kaal starts at a different time. Most generic Panchang sites ignore this. We don’t.

Common Questions

About the Panchang.

Quick answers to help you make the most of daily Panchang.

Why does Panchang differ for different cities?

Because Panchang timings depend on local sunrise and sunset, which vary with latitude and longitude. Sunrise in Mumbai is about 8 minutes later than in Delhi, and 30+ minutes later than in Kolkata.

Since Rahu Kaal, Yamaganda, and Gulika Kaal are calculated as fractions of the daylight period starting from sunrise, they shift accordingly. Our Panchang auto-detects your exact location for precise timings.

What is Rahu Kaal and should I really avoid it?

Rahu Kaal is a ~90-minute inauspicious period each day, ruled by the shadow planet Rahu. It's traditionally avoided for starting new ventures, important meetings, auspicious events, and journey commencement.

Classical view: avoid initiations during Rahu Kaal. Ongoing activities are fine. Daily routines (eating, office work, etc.) are not affected.

What's the difference between Tithi and Vaar?

Vaar is the weekday (Monday, Tuesday, etc.) — simple solar-based 7-day cycle.

Tithi is the lunar day — there are 30 tithis in a lunar month, calculated by the Moon's angular distance from the Sun. Tithis don't align with solar days — a single tithi can span parts of two calendar days.

Is Abhijit Muhurat always auspicious?

Almost always. Abhijit is the ~48-minute period around local solar noon and is considered highly auspicious for most activities — especially starting new work, signing agreements, or making important decisions.

Exception: Abhijit is not considered favorable on Wednesdays according to most classical sources. Also, when Abhijit overlaps with Rahu Kaal or Yamaganda, its auspiciousness is partially nullified.

Can I plan my day without consulting Panchang?

Of course — Panchang is a guide, not a rule. Most successful people don't consult Panchang for every decision. Where Panchang is most useful: new ventures, auspicious ceremonies, marriage dates, griha pravesh, and similar life events.

For daily work, health habits, and relationships — your own common sense and values matter far more than any muhurat.
