What is Mangal Dosha?
Mangal Dosha (also known as Kuja Dosha in South India or Chevvai Dosham in Tamil) is a consideration in Vedic astrology when Mars (Mangal / Kuja) occupies the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th, or 12th house from the Lagna (ascendant), Moon sign, or Venus in a birth chart.
It is most prominently examined during kundli matching (marriage compatibility). Classical texts suggest that if only one partner in a marriage has Mangal Dosha, it creates an imbalance that may lead to friction or loss. If both partners have the dosha, it is said to cancel out — this is called dosha samya.
However, many astrologers note that Mangal Dosha is widely over-diagnosed. Classical texts include numerous cancellation conditions (parihara) that nullify the dosha entirely — making it far less common than popular belief suggests.
